Why a freediving school in El Hierro?
It all started when the world stopped in 2020. In our case, here on the island, the pandemic forced us to suspend scuba diving for a few months, a circumstance that we took advantage of to explore what was then an unknown discipline for us: freediving.
As the months progressed and the effects of the pandemic subsided, the dive centers on El Hierro reopened and we went back to work. During the summer of 2020, the island experienced a near invasion of peninsular divers, keeping us busy until the end of the year. With the departure of the tourist hordes at the end of 2020, we resumed freediving and gradually trained until we obtained our certifications as AIDA freediving instructors.
There we started to kick around the idea of a project and immediately, in a rather impulsive and exciting way, we started to shape it, always revolving around the idea of teaching this sport, of dedicating ourselves to something we love and that somehow completes a lifestyle.
We have big plans for 1501. We start teaching underwater freediving courses with love and attention, to small groups to whom we will teach "our" little island in the water.
However, this is not all: in the development of the project is the idea of taking it beyond the marine depths, to explore the spectacular routes of El Hierro, to immerse ourselves in the paths of its history and its spectacular geography, its volcanic origins, its evolution over millions of years.
In short, 1501 is born as a freediving school in El Hierro that will lead us from the depths of the sea to new adventures in its trails, cliffs, ancient craters and volcanic peaks.
This space will witness the convergence of our fundamental pillars of 1501: freediving, the sport we are passionate about practicing and teaching; and El Hierro, the smallest, youngest, liveliest and wildest of the Canary Islands.
Today, our place in the world.
